Our willingness to accept scientific claims that are against common sense is the key to an understanding of the real struggle between science and the supernatural. We take the side of science in spite of the patent absurdity of some of its constructs… in spite of the tolerance of the scientific community for unsubstantiated just-so stories, because we have a prior commitment, a commitment to materialism… [M]aterialism is absolute, for we cannot allow a Divine Foot in the door.3 (And remember from chapter 6 that materialism is almost interchangeable with naturalism.)

The imago dei is woven into our moral fabric. A person can say, “We can’t judge other people’s truths” all day long, but will get visibly uncomfortable when you ask if that applies to a hypothetical society that tortures babies for fun or believes that sex slavery is a solid business investment. Psychopaths aside, we all know that some things are wrong—for everyone, at all times, and in all cultures. The moral law is written on our hearts (Romans 2:15).

There are certain parts of humanity that, if removed, create a vacuum. Whatever fills the void ultimately becomes a monster because we are being ruled by something that was never meant to rule. The moderns rejected God, which created a vacuum of worship that reason and science then tried to fill. When the postmodernists rejected objective truth, emotions were next in line for the throne.

Moral relativism says, “What’s true for you may not be true for me. Nobody can tell me what is true. Let’s all hold hands and sing ‘Kumbaya.’ Nobody is wrong—what’s not to celebrate?” The functional conclusion, however, is just a new objective standard: Nobody can say that anybody else is wrong. If you do, you’ve broken the cardinal rule of moral relativism, and you will be publicly shamed for it. As Jonathan Merritt says in The Atlantic,
